What would a scientist need to see matter at atomic level? In Canada they’d need about ten years, the will of an entire scientific community and $174 million. That’s what it took to build the Canadian Light Source.

The Canadian Light Source is the only synchrotron in Canada and one of the newest and most powerful in the world. The value of the synchrotron lies in the light that it produces - literally millions of times brighter than the sun. In this building, a fusion of science and creativity is helping researchers shine a whole new light on everything from nanotechnology to life sciences.

From improving imaging techniques used to see inside our bodies, looking at the antibacterial properties of nano silver, solving the arsenic problem in drinking water in Bangladesh or exploring ways to clean up carbon - Things will come out of the Canadian Light source that will have a huge impact on innovation and a huge impact on our daily quality of life.

Science fiction author Robert. J. Sawyer is featured during his time as Writer in Residence at this world class facility. “I love being able to walk around the floor at a place like the CLS where on any given day you will have someone doing chemistry and maybe physics, engineering, medicine, geology or even archaeology and some of the social sciences, it’s all in here in a given day.”
