Pride, ego, revenge, racism kept barely in check by the needs of society; psychopathic scheming discovered too late; and married couples doomed because they do not really know each other: the problems of Shakespeare's OTHELLO are the problems of today. And what caused mayhem and murder in 1604 still tears individuals, couples, and society apart. After not receiving the promotion to lieutenant he believes he has deserved, Othello's ensign, Iago, poisons Othello's mind by slowly doling out fraudulent “evidence” that Desdemona-Othello's new wife- is cheating on him with Cassio-his new lieutenant. By playing the part of an honest man whose only concern is for the welfare of those he is conning and manipulating, Iago systematically causes them to destroy each other and themselves. Iago begins his machinations with the gullible Roderigo-madly in love with the now married Desdemona-still fatally believing that Iago is on his side. In our adaptation of OTHELLO, Roderigo serves as narrator as well as Iago's first victim; but he is a narrator who never finds out how the story will end.
