When the Irish fled the Potato Famine, they brought to Canada their most precious gifts, hope and generosity. This is the haunting story of one particular Irishman, Father Bernard McGauran, and how he exemplified the Irish spirit. Through his efforts, French and English, Catholic and Protestant, joined together in an extraordinary effort to ease the suffering of the Summer of Sorrow in 1847, when thousands of starving Irish famine victims flooded in to Quebec with typhus and cholera. So moved was McGauran by the immigrants' plight that, in 1856, he opened St. Brigit's Home, a refuge for the Irish elderly, orphans, and the destitute, that stands today. Produced by Lindalee Tracey, a French and Irish Canadian who helps us to discover an unsung hero. In French: La force de l'espoir
