The defeat of the French by the British in North America marked the beginning of a terrible time for the Mi'kmaq. The land that sustained them was taken away. Bounties were placed on their heads. Deadly disease was deliberately introduced into their communities. Still in the midst of all this horror, the Mi'kmaq managed to escape to their woodland retreats and also managed to rescue many of their Acadian friends from the British imposed deportation of 1755 and in doing so, guaranteed the survival of the Acadian culture. The end of the colonial period brought even more torment for the Mi'kmaq as programs of cultural annihilation were continued by the Government of Canada. In French: La colère de l'empire
