On a remote island near the North Pole the Norwegians are building an International Seed Bank inside a frozen Arctic mountain. The aim is to safeguard the world's agriculture from future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change. It's known as the Doomsday Vault. Svalbard is a group of islands run by the Norwegians just 1,000 km from the North Pole. They're remote, cold, pristine. In one of these sandstone mountains the Norwegians are building the Seed bank. But it will be the Global Crop Diversity Trust run by Cary Fowler that will maintain it for evermore.
