This art history documentary profiles the fascinating and paradoxical life of North American wilderness artist, Paul Kane. In 1846, Paul Kane hitched a ride out of Toronto via the fur-trade brigades to be one of the first to capture the last vestiges of 19th century native life in the North American west. By exploring his life and his work, the documentary shows how Kane's art was shaped by his mentors, his patrons and his passion. Kane's artwork is some of the earliest and, in many cases, the only record of life in the Northwest before it was changed by white settlement. His romantic oil paintings, along with the best-selling book about his travels, influenced domestic and international perceptions of North American Aboriginal people. Today, Paul Kane remains one of the most frequently reproduced Canadian painters, past or present. His pictures of early native life are used to illustrate history in books, films, and at historic sites. While his artwork is familiar, Kane the artist is not as well-known. The photograph above is of Paul Kane wearing the buckskin jacket from his western journey. In French: Visions amerindiennes - L'art de Paul Kane
