In April of 1899, Vanya and Loosha Perverseff (the director's great-grandparents) came to Canada with 2,300 other Doukhobors. Simple, devout, mostly illiterate peasants, the Doukhobors were pacifists, persecuted by the Russian government for refusing to bear arms for Czar Nicholas II.
