On the 150th Anniversary of the women's rights movement, women gathered to celebrate, criticize and reassess. Betty Friedan claims victory, Hillary Clinton invites vigilance, and leading thinkers warn of the demons which have haunted the movement from its beginning. The program looks back to the story of the early pioneers of feminism. It introduces the major characters; Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Declaration describes the meeting of these minds, and the writing of a declaration for women's rights in 1848. The state of the women's movement today is examined while activists sign a recom-mitment to the original declaration. We look to leading women's historians for the story of marginalised feminists, who have only recently been appreciated for their leadership. A Declaration of Sentiment also undertakes an examination of the effects women have had on religion. Special focus is given in the last section of the documentary to examine the prospects for the future of the women's movement; specifically, young women today. |
