In 1909 René Richard arrived in Montreal from Switzerland. He was 14. His family moved west to farm in Alberta, and within a few years he began a series of adventures to the “great white north”, where he began to paint the beauty he saw. In 1931, after a three year sojourn in Paris, Richard returned to the wilds of Canada. In 1940 he settled in Baie St-Paul where he married and started painting seriously, leaving behind a pictorial legacy boundless in scope. He was awarded the Order of Canada. In French: René Richard: Peintre du Nord
