Recent events have shown how exclusive school cliques and narrow definitions of social status can cause great emotional pain - and contribute to terrible acts of aggression. “In-groups” and social cliques are as old as high school itself and are a basic dynamic of teen life. However, when they are used to constantly exclude individual students and stigmatize them as outsiders, dangerous dynamics often develop. This program explores and details ways students can ease the social isolation of any and all students by creating a caring and inclusive school culture. Topics include: why students join groups, how groups achieve status, how outsiders are treated, how racial, gender, and sexual identity issues affect school communites, and how we can create school cultures that value and include all students.
