However, since the irritating arrival of ‘dark energy’ plunged cosmology into a period of self-doubt, the question of what came before has re-emerged and is being tackled by some of the brightest minds in physics. We take an incredible journey through mindbending theories into the land before time. Is our Big Bang just the latest in a never ending sequence of similar events, which happens when universes bump into each other? Or was our Big Bang a bounce? Will everything in the expanding universe end up travelling at the speed of light? If this happens, the flow of time will become meaningless. Is our universe the offspring of another, older universe? Could random fluctuations in space-time of old universes cause the spontaneous beginning of rapid expansion and the birth of an entire cosmos? The really interesting aspect of all this is that we might be able to observe rather than just theorise. Machines are being built to make measurements; satellites are sending back the first trickles of data. Will we finally be able to reveal what existed before time? |
