Craig Kielburger's life changed forever when he read an article in a Toronto newspaper about the murder of a liberated Pakistani carpet worker who had been speaking out about millions of other children who live lives of virtual slavery. Iqbal Massih was 12 when he was killed - the same age as Craig. Craig wanted to learn everything he could about child labour, so he went on a seven week trip to South Asia. He spent time with children leased by their poverty-stricken parents to work as bonded labourers in brick kilns and carpet factories. Craig realized the one thing he could do to help was to tell their stories to anyone who would listen. He held a press conference. That caught the attention of the international press. |
