In the remote Kapchorwe region of Uganda, female circumcision ceremonies occur every two years. In the summer of 1996, TVE producers looked at the United Nations Population Fund's REACH effort to stop the practice. (See the “Cutting Edge” from “Not the Numbers Game” series - also distributed by McNabb & Connolly) Now the TVE crew returns to Uganda with BBC-TV correspondent Donu Kogbara to find out whether the project has been successful in discouraging the life-threatening practice of female genital mutilation. The manager of the REACH program has made a few converts, but Kogbara cannot hide her despair at the bloodletting she finds. |
