The death of eight famous Manchester United footballers in 1958 shocked the world. British pilot James Thain was blamed for the accident by German aviation authorities. It would take him more than a decade to clear his name.

On 6 February 1958, Matt Busby's brilliant young Manchester United team were returning from a European cup semi-final against Red Star Belgrade, in Yugoslavia, when tragedy struck. Following a refuelling stop at Munich airport, the chartered BEA Airspeed Ambassador plane carrying Busby's Babes crashed on the snowy runway on its third attempt at take-off. Twenty-three of the 43 passengers died. Many press journalists also perished in the crash.

This black-and-white drama-documentary tells the story of this tragedy, using eyewitness accounts and contemporary newsreel, and dramatically reconstructs the fateful last journey of the team. In contrast to today's confident well travelled players, Busby's Babes were unsophisticated lads, nervously packing canned beans for their trip behind the Iron Curtain (for many, it was their first trip abroad).

The programme also looks at the aftermath of the crash and the resulting investigation that was held into its cause.
