Filmed over five months, the documentary follows the female students as they take their first driving lessons – in cars that emit an electronic “Praise Allah” every time the break pedal is depressed – right through to their driving tests. And looks at the men who attempt to help those women while telling them to “drive more like a man”. The programme provides a revealing look at how life has in some ways radically changed for women in Afghanistan since the collapse of the Taliban, but in other ways, remains difficult. Both hilarious and shocking, this documentary charts the women's struggle in a maledominated world, but also puts a human face on a country often in the news. |
