The Peregrine falcon is one of the world's most widely dispersed species. In a full stoop, a Peregrine can reach speeds of over 360 kilometres an hour, making it the world's fastestanimal. The Peregrine falcon is a species that has been at the edge of extinction. The liberal use of the pesticide DDT was devastating to the Peregrine population. The decline of these birds became critical in the late 1960s and early 70s, prompting Richard Fyfe to found the Peregrine Recovery Program in 1970. By 1975, the Peregrine had vanished from most of North America; virtually extinct in the United States and nine of Canada's ten provinces. Return of the Peregrine tells the story of Dr. Gordon Court and his mentor, Richard Fyfe, in their efforts to bring the Peregrine falcon back to the skies. Their peregrine recovery program was based in Wainwright, Alberta. This is a conservation success story filled with adventure and intrigue, and a human tale of friendship, courage and vision. |
