When a middle school student is assigned a research project on pelagic fish, she turns to the Internet. She finds a web site hosted by Peter Benchley, author of JAWS, and soon learns that pelagic means “of the open ocean or seas” ...and the adventure begins. Wondrous deep sea and archival footage dispels myths and presents shocking statistics on the lives of sharks, tunas and billfish, the apex predators of the ocean food chain. Threats to pelagic fish include over-fishing, the impact of growing human populations, habitat destruction and the waste of “accidental catches” in nets set for other fish. Strategies to preserve the remaining giants include more international cooperation, size regulations for catches, and catch and release programs for sport fishing. |
