In Montreal between seven in the morning and six at night, the open air farmers' market is teeming with small growers of corn, potatoes and various fruits and vegetables. They sell their produce directly to passersby without middlemen. It's the Marché Jean Talon, where the descendants of Louis Hébert still ply their trade. Hébert (1604-1671) was the first farmer to sow wheat in Québec. An apothecary in the service of the king, he emigrated from France with Marc Lescargot, the poet. Prominent Québeçois filmmaker Richard Boutet traces the genealogy of Louis Hébert, captures the seasons from seeding to harvesting, and charts the evolution of French immigrants to “canayen” colonists and finally to French Canadians and Québeçois. In French: Semailles, Les: L'heritage de Louis Hébert |
