Harvey Spak is an Albertan writer/filmmaker whose grandfather, Alexander Szpak came to Canada from Ukraine in 1900 as part of the first wave of Ukrainian immigrants to settle in Northeastern Alberta. Alexander, a horse breeder and local veterinarian, bought a 160 acre homestead for $10.00 and dreamt of a better life for his family. Tragically his life was cut short one wintry night when his horse-drawn sleigh became stuck in the train tracks. There was no warning at the crossing, no whistle in the fog. A train ploughed into the sleigh. Though his beloved horses escaped, Alexander Szpak gave his life for the animals he loved. This is just one of the many stories that Harvey Spak narrates abut the rural community he grew up in. Produced by Ukrainian-Canadian filmmaker Halya Kuchmij. In French: Plénitude du temps, La: Histoires ukréniennes de l'Alberta |
