This film is about the life of Mary Coyne Rowell Jackman (1904-1994). Passionate nationalists, Mary's family had roots in the Methodist Church, education, national & international politics. Her question was how to live the values that surrounded her. The film features commentary by Mary's contemporaries, thoughts from her children, archival photographs & footage. Mary struggled with what it meant to grow up, marry & raise children in a family & society where roles were given & gendered. Through the Student Christian Movement, Mary had the opportunity to meet young people of faith from around the world. The lessons of this experience pushed & challenged her for her whole life. Mary advocated for social & political changes that would build Canada as a more equitable society, a model among nations. As an internationalist, Mary believed that nations could & should associate for human advancement. Mary contributed enormously to the recognition of Canadian artists. She was instrumental to the building of important individual & gallery collections across Canada. The film presents what is both unique & universal about Mary's life as daughter, sister, student, church worker, community worker, citizen, wife, mother. |
