Gus is a North American Grizzly Bear. At the moment he is quite small, but one day he will be HUGE! A big Grizzly can weigh as much as a small car. Male grizzly bears, like Gus's dad, usually weigh around 200 kilograms, as big as a sumo wrestler. However, the biggest Grizzly bear on record weighed a whopping 750 kilograms. Even on all fours, an adult is over a metre in height and over two metres long. Despite their size, they can run at nearly 50 kilometres anhour, swim and climb. At three months old, Gus is still living with his mum and his brother Gil. Gus was born in January. It is important to stay warm, so Gus and the family stayed in the underground den until April. In fact, Grizzlies spend half of their lives asleep. Bears eat everything humans eat – and more. Three quarters of their diet is fruit, berries and grasses, but they will eat pretty much anything. Eat and sleep, sleep and eat… Not a bad life for a Grizzly Bear! |
