This programme tells the story of the pioneering missions to our planetary neighbours and relives our first glimpses of alien terrains. The Earth is a living world with drifting continents and volcanoes that constantly resurface the planet. Were there other rocky worlds similarly “alive”? Ancient Venusian lava flows the size of continents and collosal extinct volcanoes on Mars suggested that they had been, but for a while it seemed that the Earth was the only planet with a geological pulse. Terra Firma takes us on a journey beyond our seemingly dead neighbours to the very ends of the solar system where we discovered - against all the odds - that the solar system is very much alive.
