In June 2002 Israel controversially began construction of a 115-kilometre-long (71-mile) security fence. The aim, the Israeli government has stated, is to prevent Palestinian 'terrorists' from infiltrating Israel after two years of incessant hostilities. For the Palestinians it is nothing more than a sinister ploy to grab more of their land. This documentary follows this extraordinary project and meets the Palestinians and Israelis whose lives are affected by it. Unravelling the far-reaching consequences of the project, Behind the Fence looks at the implications for Middle East peace and for the future of these increasingly divided people. “Producer Gilmore has assembled a collection of moving stories about families divided by the fence - peaceful individuals from both sides who are by turns puzzled, distressed and finally shocked by the arrival of this invasive man-made barrier. Sobering.” Observer
