Mountains have been described as bridges between heaven and earth, and the home to spirits and gods. Eyewitness: Mountain explains how they came to exist, and how they act as habitats for thousands of species of plants and animals. Split into four parts, this documentary begins with an explanation of the birthing of mountains. From the mythologies of the Inca and Navajo to scientific explanations, the viewer receives an enthralling lesson. Most jagged peaks were once flat layers on the ocean bed and granite domes once pools of molten rock underground. The next part addresses how mountains are shaped by glaciers, which chisel valleys into the mountain sides, which are then eroded by ice, wind, and rain. The following segment reveals what kinds of life can be sustained on mountains where weather conditions are harsh. The final segment shows how humans have climbed mountains and utilized resources such as copper and gold. |
