Anxious to protect Charmer and, if possible prevent bloodshed, Ranger tells Friendly that Scarface is preparing to attack. The animals of Farthing Wood take refuge in Fox's earth, but when Scarface and the blue foxes surround them, Fox challenges Scarface to single combat, duelling to the death.Their fight is fierce and bloody, but Fox suddenly comes out on top. Before he can kill his enemy, however, the Warden arrives and Scarface slinks away to lick his wounds and nurse his battered pride. Just beyond the boundary of White Deer Park, Bold and Whisper meet Shadow, who is shocked by Bold's terrible appearance. Clearly, for him, the end is near.
