Bold and Whisper are surprised to discover that a large, ferocious dog is all bark and no bite. Rollo is lonely and gladly shares his food in exchange for their friendship. Whisper delights Bold with the news that she is carrying his cubs, then dashes his hopes by insisting that they should be born in White Deer Park, under the protection of Bold's illustrious father. For the crippled young fox it is a bitter blow, but he agrees to go with her. Half-starved and shivering from the bitter cold, Bold struggles doggedly to keep up with Whisper, but in his heart he knows he will never again enter White Deer Park.
