Following Crow's advice, Bold has limped into a town to find food by scavenging. He is attracted to Whisper, a young vixen who is impressed to know that Bold is the son of the famous Farthing Wood fox. In White Deer Park, winter is coming once more and Adder, still holed up by Scarface, decides to take her winter sleep and let revenge wait until spring. The weasels are judged guilty by Owl, and punished for giving the wrong message to Adder, and the Farthing Wood animals suffer a sad loss when Badger dies peacefully of old age. Fox is angered to discover that there is a developing relationship between his daughter Charmer and Scarface's son Ranger, but eventually he agrees to meet Ranger and they reach an understanding.
