Badly maimed, Bold struggles to survive. Crow calls Shadow to help and together they feed scraps to the young fox. It is soon clear to Bold that his hunting days are over, but after stealing chickens from a farm, he is run to earth by the farmer and his dog. Only his pitiful state spares him from execution by the farmer's gun. In White Deer Park, Scarface is determined that the Farthing Wood animals shall pay for Bounder's death. Contemptuously, he dismisses Ranger's pleas for peace, and instead seeks out Adder and bites off her tail. She retreats into a hole, from which there is no escape.
