Badger is spotted still alive, caught in some reeds and close to drowning. Toad, Hare and Weasel swim over to rescue him. Of Fox there is no sign. Sadly the survivors contemplate the future without their leader, and it is with a heavy heart that Badger agrees to take his place. Mole has a narrow escape form the jaws of a pike, then Toad loses his sense of direction. The Fieldmice have babies and refuse to continue. They are all tired and demoralised, so Badger suggests it is time to stop for a rest.
