Cold and wet, the animals take refuge in an empty barn. Fox sets up a look-out rota in case of danger. When it is Pheasant's turn, he is fast asleep so his wife keeps watch instead. But she is seen by the farmer, who shoots her and locks the barn door. Tunnelling beneath the floorboards, Mole digs an escape route, but Fox has to turn back to meet the challenge of the farmer's bloodthirsty dog. When at last they reach the safety of a copse, the animals discover that Adder has been left behind.
