Adrian Cowell, director of the BAFTA-winning The Decade of Destruction, returns to Amazonia to ask how the forest might be saved. The 1992 World Environmental Summit was held in Brazil, to highlight international concern about the burning of the Amazon forest. Those who hoped that the summit would mark a turning-point have had their hopes dashed. The rate of deforestation has almost doubled, and there's worse to come. Scientific predictions vary from 40% of the Brazilian Amazon deforested by 2020 to almost the entire forest gone by 2010. |
