In the fledging colony of New France, an extraordinary new society was beginning to emerge. A society in which a genuine bond of friendship and mutual respect was established between the European newcomers and a native population that called itself Mi'kmaq. The French called this new land Acadia, a Mi'kmaq word meaning place of plenty. This idyllic world lasted until the final defeat of the French in North America. A defeat that would mean unspeakable tragedy for both the Acadians and the Mi'kmaq, but a defeat that could not break their enduring bonds of friendship. In French: La croix et la plume d'aigle |
