The Exploits is Newfoundland's longest river, and has an intriguing mix of spectacular landscape and vibrant culture. The 246 kilometre river takes a spectacular journey across the Island, from rugged inland forests to the island-dotted iceberg alley known as Notre Dame Bay. The Exploits brought a new economy and radical change to Newfoundland and the river resonates profoundly with the haunting presence of the Beothuck people. The Exploits' rich waters are one of the world's most prolific producers of Atlantic salmon. Exploits Island was once a thriving community, but is now home to only one couple, who have lived off the land, hours away from their neighbours, for nearly 40 years.
